The Power of an Embrace

It’s been over seven months since the corona virus swept the world, how are you coping? Honestly, I am a bit anxious about what the coming winter will look like with no indoor places to take my young boys (winters in Michigan can be brutal) and I am leaning into my art, more and more because of it. Sometimes it is hard to see the good when it feels everything in the world is imploding—natural disasters, pandemics, politics, social unrest…man, this year has been rough on all of us! But you know what I have seen throughout it all?

I have noticed families coming together, exhibiting a resiliency to what this year has thrown at them and becoming closer to one another in the process. Family is the ultimate safe space when everything else falls away. With these thoughts in my head, I began curating a new collection centered on family and the feeling of safety which lead me to realizing when I, myself, feel the safest.

At the beginning of the pandemic, my husband and I made the difficult decision to live apart to contain and protect the boys and I from any exposure my husband might have had at his essential job. I think those weeks apart and then being reunited, made me recognize what I had been missing while he was away. The simplest of things, his embrace. His arms are where I feel safest, where my anxiety takes a deep breath, and where my mind can rest listening to his heart.

These feelings of safety that can be experienced in a partner’s arms can also be reflected in the relationship between parent and child. The seemingly magical ability a mother has to calm and comfort her children with a snuggle or how parents do their utmost best, in the worst of times, to make their children feel loved and safe within the circle of their family. All these ideas I explore in my newest collection.

‘Love’s Embrace’ is a celebration of not only my family but your family, all families. A celebration of the way we can provide love, hope, strength, and comfort to each other. It is a celebration and a reminder that family is everything and you can survive insurmountable things with them by your side. One loving embrace can calm fears, drown out anxieties, provide comfort. How can something so small be so powerful?
